Unforgettable film soundtracks
Have you ever come home from the cinema and in discussing the film heard the phrase, “The film was great, shame about the soundtrack though…”? An original score can be the making of a film and is as important a part of cinematography as the direction and acting itself. A song can become a huge hit on the back of a film and artist recognition can sky-rocket if it is played over a box-office smash. With so many classic movie-music moments it is hard to pick, so let’s go back through some of the most memorable movie soundtracks of all time:
Saturday Night Fever (1977) starring John Travolta and a pair of very tight, very white flairs is an incredible soundtrack moment. Disco sensations the Bee Gees sang “Stayin’ Alive” and forevermore encapsulated the disco era.
Superfly (1972) was a funky, super fresh Curtis Mayfield soul sensation and was far more famous than the film itself. With songs like ‘Freddie’s Dead’ and ‘Pusherman’ the inner city drugs culture was taken apart and given a new sound.
The Graduate (1967) welcomed duo Simon and Garfunkel on the scene to lend a memorable backdrop to the seductive drama starring Dustin Hoffman as the love interest of Mrs Robinson. With classic hit songs such as ‘The Sound of Silence’ and ‘Scarborough Fair’, the mix of old and new hits became an instant classic.
Purple Rain (1984) catapulted serial groove king and petite pin up Prince to movie stardom when his Purple Rain soundtrack blew everyone away. Critics praised it as a work of genius, with incredible tracks such as ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Let’s Go Crazy’.
Philadelphia (1993) delivered an Oscar-winning performance from Tom Hanks who played a lawyer suffering discrimination when he is fired for having AIDS.
Music can entirely change the tone of a film or add emotion to important scenes. Whether you’re an Elvis fan listening to a movie soundtrack in your Memphis office or a Bollywood nut grooving in the streets of New Delhi, music has the power to move us and never more so than when coupled with our favourite films.

The Original Soundtrack $68.79 10cc’s third album, The Original Soundtrack, finally scored them a major hit in the United States, and rightly so; “I’m Not in Love” walked a fine line between self-pity and self-parody with its weepy tale of a boy who isn’t in love (really!), and the marvelously lush production and breathy vocals allowed the tune to work beautifully either as a sly joke or at face value. The album’s opener, “Une Nuit a Paris,” was nearly as marvelous; a sly and often hilarious extended parody of both cinematic stereotypes of life and love in France and overblown European pop. And side one’s closer, “Blackmail,” was a witty tale of sex and extortion gone wrong, with a superb guitar solo embroidering the ride-out. That’s all on side one; side two, however, is a bit spottier, with two undistinguished tunes, “Brand New Day” and “Flying Junk,” nearly dragging the proceedings to a halt before the band rallied the troops for a happy ending with the hilarious “The Film of Our Love.” The Original Soundtrack’s best moments rank with the finest work 10cc ever released; however, at the same time it also displayed what was to become their Achilles’ heel — the inability to make an entire album as strong and memorable as those moments. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Soundtrack $23.99 Digitmovies is glad to present a full stereo de-luxe edition CD of the complete OST by Ennio Morricone for the classic Italian western “La banda J. & S. cronaca criminale del Far West” (aka “Sonny and Jed”) directed in 1972 by Sergio Corbucci and starring Tomas Milian, Susan George and Telly Savalas. The movie tells the story of a sheriff (Savalas) who wants to track down and capture the bandit Jess Trigado (Milian) and his girlfriend Sonny (George) who usually steel money from the rich. This manhunt has the beautiful background score by Academy winner Ennio Morricone and stylistically his music for this OST is very close to the semi-pop sound of “Vamos a matar companeros”, “Che c’entriamo noi con la rivoluzione?”, the two “Provvidenza” movies , “Il mio nome ? nessuno”, “Un genio, due compari,un pollo”. In this OST, dramatic music is pratically missing and Ennio Morricone puts in evidence the comic and romantic side of the plot with a series of lovely themes, sometimes funny and brilliant like “Sonny” (Tr.1, Tr.7), “Wanted dead or alive” (Tr.2),”The saloon’s girls” (Tr.5), sometimes melancholic and romantic like “J & S love” (Tr.3) and “Sweet Susan” (Tr.6) splendidly performed by great soloists like the choir of Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni, Franco De Gemini playing the Harmonica, Alessandro Alessandroni’s whistle, Oscar Valdambrini playing the flugelhorn. In October 1972 C.A.M. issued a 45 rpm single (AMP 101) with the tracks “Sweet Susan” (A side) and “Sonny” (B side) (version edited for the single). The US Cerberus label issued in 1982 a LP (CEM-S 0111) featuring on the A side five tracks from “La banda J. & S. cronaca criminale del Far West” and on the B side selections from the OST of “I cannibali”. In 1992 six selections were released by C.A.M for the first time on CD (CAM CSE 050) in its Soundtrack Enciclopedia series coupled with selections from the OST “Le monachine” and “Professione figlio” (aka “Bugie bianche”). For this CD we could use the stereo master tapes of the original recording session kept in perfect conditions in the historic vaults of C.A.M. that gave us the chance to discover long versions of the themes “J & S love” (Tr.3) and “J & S Waltz” (Tr.4) (about 4:33 of inedit material). Together with the single edit version of “Sonny” (tr.7) we enclose about total 7:53 of material previously unreleased on the original 33 rpm and CD. Our Cd has a total length of 30:19 only, but we used all we could find on the stereo master tapes except short fragments of Saloon piano by Chopin and a fragment of an off-key violin solo. We hope that Spaghetti Westerns fans around will be happy to have in their private archives this de-luxe Cd exclusively dedicated to this short, but nice OST. |

South Pacific [Original Soundtrack] $7.97 In contrast to the experiences of many Broadway songwriters, the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II had a large say in how their shows came to the big screen. South Pacific did not arrive in movie theaters until nine years after its Broadway opening, and when it did on March 19, 1958, its two-hour, 70-minute running time allowed for the full Rodgers & Hammerstein score, plus one song, “My Girl Back Home,” that had been cut from the stage version for time. In addition to preserving their songs, the songwriters saw to it that the songs were sung by people they approved of, most of whom were not the same people seen on the screen. Mitzi Gaynor sang her own songs in the lead female role of nurse Nellie Forbush, and Ray Walston, who had played the supporting part of rowdy marine Luther Billis in the first national tour and in London, also got to sing. But Rossano Brazzi, as male lead Emile de Becque, was dubbed by opera singer Giorgio Tozzi (who was given screen credit), John Kerr as second male lead Lt. Cable was replaced by Bill Lee, and Juanita Hall, who had originated the role of Bloody Mary on Broadway, was voiced by Muriel Smith, who had played the part in London. (Several minor characters were also dubbed.) While it would have been nice if Lee and Smith were credited in the film and on the soundtrack album, the result is a well-sung version of the score. Gaynor is appropriately frisky in what is really a soubrette’s part in songs like “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy,” Tozzi is sonorous and romantic in “Some Enchanted Evening,” Lee is passionate in “Younger Than Springtime,” Smith is haunting in “Bali Ha’i” and playful in “Happy Talk,” and Walston, leading the Ken Darby Male Chorus, makes the most of “Bloody Mary” and “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” Only Smith and Walston improve upon their counterparts on the original Broadway cast album, however, with stage leads Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza particularly outdistancing their screen and soundtrack rivals. And now that CD reissues of that earlier recording contain Martin’s version of “My Girl Back Home,” one can’t even argue that the soundtrack album is more complete. The original Broadway cast album is preferred. It also sold better than the soundtrack album, but the soundtrack’s commercial performance was not at all shabby. The film was one of 1958′s ten biggest moneymakers, but the soundtrack did even better. Its run of more than seven months at number one tied it for fourth place among the longest chart toppers in history behind the original Broadway cast album, the soundtrack to West Side Story, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was not only the most successful album of 1958, but the most successful album of the second half of the 1950s. Given that success, the album has been relatively neglected in the CD era. There was a straight-transfer reissue in 1988, but it took RCA until October 24, 2000, to release a refurbished CD vers |
