Unlike many men, Alligator Records never forgets an anniversary. “The country’s largest contemporary blues label,” as it rightly bills itself, has released multidisc compilations celebrating its 20th, 25th, 30th, and now 35th years. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, only tracks recorded for an artist’s first Alligator disc are chosen for this chronologically presented summary of music that s…

With Alligator label prexy Bruce Iglauer recording some 20 or 30 tracks over two nights everytime the band went into the studio, there were bound to be some really great tracks lurking in the vaults and these are it. Noteworthy for the great performance of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads,” (previously only available as a Japanese 45) but also for the “rock & roll” inclusion of “What’d I Say” and Brewer Phillips’ take on “Kansas City.” No bottom of the barrel scrapings here. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi Performers: Brewer Phillips – Guitar (Electric), Guitar, Vocals; Hound Dog Taylor – Guitar, Guitar (Electric), Vocals; Ted Harvey – Drums

Stylistic revivalism in electronic dance music can be a tricky and somewhat nebulous concept. For music that’s so emphatically about the immediate present moment, electronica has always had a strong sense of its own history; on the other hand, it tends to place so much emphasis on forward progression (even if the nuances of the actual musical development are frequently imperceptible to the uninitiated) that there’s little time or tolerance for overt backwards-gazing. Eventually though, some amount of nostalgia-driven retreading and rediscovery was probably inevitable; as it happened, the mid-2000s — several decades and numerous clearly distinct musical phases removed from the early days of the music’s development — saw a widespread resurgence of interest in the earliest strains of late-’70s and early-’80s electronic disco. Chronologically speaking, the logical next step would be a full-on retro-revival of mid- to late-’80s Chicago house, and that’s exactly what Kikumoto Allstars (aka Australian producer Cam Farrar) has in mind with the unambiguously titled House Music. Perhaps the most striking thing about the album is the specificity of its homage: Farrar identifies not only which of the genre’s pioneering producers influenced which specific cuts on his album, but in some cases which particular tracks provided inspiration. Classic house devotees should enjoy playing spot-the-influence here: “Still Can’t Stop the House” cribs from the similarly titled Thompson & Lenoir cut, while “Bending Time” was inspired by a certain Virgo/Marshall Jefferson track and “DCO,” with its incessant, monolithic synth hook, is reminiscent of Larry Heard’s work as Mr. Fingers. Anyone without an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre, on the other hand, would be hard-pressed to distinguish these from “genuine” ’80s-vintage house cuts, so thorough is Farrar’s re-creation of the era’s specific style. It certainly helps that he used the right tools for the job, employing a dream collection of Roland analog machines (the TR-909, TR-808, TR-707, SH-101, JX-8P, TB-303, and Juno synths, for those keeping score) and, on many tracks, appropriately deadpan and sly male and female vocals. Such detailed focus on authenticity and accuracy could conceivably result in a prosaic, pointless rehash, but thankfully that’s far from the case here. Showcasing an impressive array of moods and approaches, from the hard-driving acid tracks “I’ll Make You Jack” and “Jack the House” to moodier instrumentals like “Sagittarius” and the gorgeous, scintillating “Last Train to Chi-Town,” House Music is both a loving testament to a bygone era and a breezily enjoyable demonstration of how vital that era’s music still remains, suggesting that maybe dance music sensibilities haven’t changed that much after all. ~ K. No More Music

No More Music

$11.18

Wisconsin noise rock mavens IfIHadAHiFi sound tighter and more focused on their second album, No More Music, but the manic aural scattergun approach that was their calling card on Ones and Zeroes is still very much in evidence. With Noise Lesion out of the band and Reno Loner taking over on keyboards and electronics, the samples and found sounds that were a major part of the debut are mostly absent on No More Music, and Loner’s contributions sound more like an organic part of the songs rather than a musical spanner in the works (albeit an exciting and imaginative spanner). Then again, “organic” isn’t quite the right word for IfIHadAHiFi; the band remains gloriously unnatural as Yale Delay’s harsh and edgy guitars, Mr. Alarm’s throbbing bass, and Dr. Awkward’s pile-driver drumming collide against one another like pinballs but somehow come together at crucial moments like fingers folding into a fist, ready to slam into the center of your face. Experience and roadwork have honed the group’s attack and No More Music is noticeably tighter and more precise than the debut, as the songs spin out with a relentless intensity that leaves the more measured approach of Ones and Zeroes in the dust. The curious but genuine wit of the debut isn’t as prominent this time, but the Stevie Wonder cover that closes out the album not only suggests these guys could actually be funky if they wanted to, but that there’s a human heart behind this weird machine that makes the whole thing even more remarkable. On the opening cut, IfIHadAHiFi announce that they want to steal our potential energy, but that has to be a lie — they clearly have enough power to light a major metropolis for months on end, and No More Music confirms they know just what to do with all that spare voltage. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

There’s just no way not to like Cyrus Chestnut. His playing is robust but tasteful, and he plays ballads with a liquid fluency; his original compositions brim with good cheer; he favors middling tempos that neither tempt him to show off excessively nor to bog himself down in extended, self-indulgent elaboration. His first album for the Telarc label showcases all of his strengths. He can take the unlikeliest melodies and make them sound like standards: on this album, he manages to spin equally refined musical gold out of both a schlocky 1970s love ballad (Bread’s “If”) and a faux folk song turned soul hit (Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”). And he can handle knotty Latin rhythms with offhanded ease (though the rhythmic structure on “Baby Girl’s Strut” feels a little bit disorganized). Best of all, he plays gospel tunes with a heartfelt fervor that never descends into sentimentality. Chestnut’s own “Mason Dixon Line” is one of the album’s high points, a joyful bebop number that makes you hope he’ll someday do a whole album of Bud Powell compositions. The album’s relentless, midtempo pleasantness makes it easy to stop paying attention by about halfway through, but every time you catch yourself drifting and start listening closely again, you’ll notice something else wonderful. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Cyrus Chestnut – Piano; Michael Hawkins – Bass (Upright), Bass; Neal Smith – Drums; Russell Malone – Guitar; Steve Kroon – Percussion

Grave Human Genuine

Grave Human Genuine

$29.59

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Dark Suns were frequently described as a cross between the melodic Scandinavian death metal of Opeth and the goth/doom sounds of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. But when their third full-length album, Grave Human Genuine, was released in the United States in 2008, they were being described as full-fledged progressive metal and were even being compared to Porcupine Tree. In fact, some reviewers have complained that Grave Human Genuine is “not metal enough.” But if one accepts this 2007 recording/2008 release on its own terms, Grave Human Genuine has a lot to offer. Although this 58-minute CD is essentially progressive metal, it doesn’t have the exuberance or the power metal appeal of, say, Symphony X or Rhapsody; the brooding material is a lot more melancholic. Grave Human Genuine gets a considerable amount of inspiration from Pink Floyd, and Tangerine Dream is also a valid comparison at times. Further, ambient electronica is also a noticeable influence. So with comparisons to Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, and ambient electronica being made, should Grave Human Genuine even be called metal? Yes, this German band is still relevant to metal; one still hears a little of the “Cookie Monster” growling that death metal is known for (although at least 90 percent of the album’s vocals are clean vocals), and parts of Grave Human Genuine are certainly heavier and more metallic than Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, or Tangerine Dream. Nonetheless, anyone who is in the mood for a big dose of bone-crushing, pummeling brutality won’t find it here; Grave Human Genuine, despite its heavier moments, is ultimately a very reflective, darkly contemplative affair that is more moody than it is heavy. And those who appreciate the gloomier side of prog metal will appreciate the direction that Dark Suns take on their third full-length album. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Kristoffer Gildenlow – Bass; Maik Knappe – Guitar; Niko Knappe – Drums, Vocals; Thomas Bremer – Keyboards; Torsten Wenzel – Guitar
