Women and Children Trafficking From Thailand to Japan
Human trafficking is rapidly increasing across the globe, thus calling for readdress. Based on the increasing cases of human trafficking in different nations of the world, research on the topic is inevitable. Precisely, human trafficking from Thailand to Japan has drawn significant global attention due to the many cases reported annually. The case of women and children trafficking from Thailand to Japan has been overwhelming over the recent past, thus calling for immediate action. Women and children trafficking from Thailand to Japan have been overwhelming in present days thus calling for urgent response. This paper will sufficiently explore the scale of human trafficking form Thailand to Japan, the victims of the practice, as well as the major sending and receiving countries. Additionally, he causes of human trafficking, factors facilitating the practice, as well as the characteristics of the human trafficking practice. It is also of great importance to note that, attention will also be paid to the actions undertaken to combat the practice as well as the factors barring the stoppage of the practice (ILO 2005:49)
Scale of Human Trafficking
The concept of human trafficking has been in existence for a long period dating back to beginning of civilizations. Van (2000:113) argued that, human trafficking is a serious crime against humanity that leads to degradation and violation of human dignity. Basically, the act involves; recruitment, transportation, transfer and harboring of persons by the use of force. It is worth noting that, the motives of human trafficking are ill driven, whereby forced labor and sexual exploitation are the key factors leading to the practice (Van 2000:113). It is important to note that every country of the world is affected by human trafficking in one way or another. In addition, all sorts of human groups including men, women and children fall victims of the act (Van 2000:113).
In the last two decades, human trafficking has been in the increase thus drawing great attention from the global community. As indicated by ILO (2005:49), human trafficking for sexual exploitation or forced labor is the fast growing sectors in criminal activity. A report by human rights watches indicate that the human trafficking sector is very lucrative, whereby a profit of more than $31 dollars is realized (ILO 2005:49). This high profits makes human trafficking the second most lucrative criminal activity after drug trafficking.
Human trafficking has been identified as a very lucrative industry. Research by different agencies has ranked human trafficking as the fastest growing criminal industry with the highest revenues. It has been noted that, women and children are the main victims of human trafficking. A report by Denisova (2001:4) has shown that the annual revenue from human trafficking is going as high as USD$9 billion. Over the last decade, human trafficking reached an epidemic state following the high demands of human services. In this case, the year 2000 reported a global market of $42.5 billion of human trafficking. Based on research conducted by Denisova (2001:4), more than 2.5 million people are trafficked from more than 127 nations of the world. It is important to note that, the processes involved in human trafficking are different from those involved in people smuggling. This is so because, people smuggling is merely transportation of people, which is aimed at evading the legal entry procedures (Denisova 2001:4).
No single country of the world has been exempted from the elements of forced labor or sexual exploitation. These evil practices are the main motives influencing the engagement in human trafficking. Reports by Adepoju (2005:75) has revealed that there is an alarming increase in the demand of human services fro the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation all over the globe. In this case, all countries are involved in one way or another in whole process of human trafficking. For instance, different countries are sending persons, transporting people or receiving people or a combination of the three for the purpose of exploitation. It is of great importance to note that, people are in most cases moved from a less developed country to a more developed country but not vice verse. This is to say that, poor nations are at a more risk to the issue of human trafficking as compared to developed nations. This insight is very evident through the present situation in Thailand where women and children are transported to Japan for sexual exploitation and forced labor (Adepoju 2005:75).
Aghatise (2004:1126) indicated that, the current trends and progress in the issue of human trafficking is turning to be a global problem. This is so because every country of the world is taking part in the whole process either as a beneficiary or a victim. A significant attention has been directed to labor markets which have been blamed for creating opportunities for human trafficking. This phenomenon has been very evident in industrialized countries like Japan, where cheap unskilled labor is required. In this regard, the job market setup and demands are associated with the issue of human trafficking and more specifically forced labor. Despite that, many governments have been in the forefront in combating forced labor and sexual exploitation, the vices seem to be in the increase (Aghatise 2004:1126). The government moves to combat human trafficking have been hindered by the loopholes in administration and the lack of good will. Selfish interest and motives of key government officials has been attributed to the growth of human trafficking. In this case, most of the large scale human trafficking cases have been associated with key government officials. This is facilitated by the abuse of power with the aim of enriching oneself at the expense of the people (Aghatise 2004:1126).
Victims of human trafficking
Human trafficking is a global calamity that is not only affecting individuals but also institutions, countries as well as communities. In this regard, all people are affected in one way or another by the issue of human trafficking. The poor are the main victims of human trafficking, whereby they easily lured by the traps of the traffickers. This phenomenon is dominant in developing countries, whereby the people are overlaid by numerous economic and social problems. Children and women are the major victims of human trafficking. As indicated by Andrees et al (2005:55), the issue of sexual and labor exploitation has led to significant demand for people to fill this gap. With this in mind, traffickers focus their operations on people communities or nations. For instance, women and children are the main victims of human trafficking in Thailand and Japan. Other nations have also reported high cases of women and children trafficking as compared to men.

Grandpaws [Japan] $38.39 Jimmy Rowles’ piano style was always somewhat unique. He pared down the music of his idol Art Tatum to its essential basics, always hinted at more than he actually played, and had a vast knowledge of chords. Rowles’ subtle approach is heard in prime form on this album. Joined by bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart, Rowles performs two originals (including “My Mother’s Love,” and which was given lyrics by Johnny Mercer), two ballads, and an obscurity, plus a pair of medleys: one of “Blood Count” and “Isn’t It Romantic,” and the other a fascinating 13-minute exploration that includes “Lush Life,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “I Love You,” “I Hadn’t Anyone ‘Til You,” “Margie,” “Chicago” and “Desert Song.” Somehow, Rowles makes the latter performance seem logical. Well worth searching for. [Grandpaws has been re-released on CD from the original issue on the U.S. based Choice label as a Japan-only import on Absord Japan.] ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |
