Has it ever occured to you…?
As I read the prologue of The Phantom of the Opera, I realized that the story was loosely based on actual facts. There was a phantom of the opera, there was a viscount de chagny etc… As I read through this, I asked myself if it has ever occured to Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Weber and the rest of the people involved in the countless reproductions of this story, or even the patrons that saw the play, read the book, bought the movie, that if the character of Erik (the phantom) was as anonymous and shy and miserable as he was in the book and the play, would he really appreciate the fact that his miserable story has become a best selling novel, the longest running show on broadway and a big movie hit? is that really any way to respect a deceased person, by taking his misery and commercializing it?
First of all, I love Phantom of the Opera. Hey, it makes for some awesome fanfiction.
Anyway, I know Erik probably would be pretty upset about all of this, but I also think that he did want to be remembered, just not for the story of his life. I think he wanted to be remembered for his music, which was sadly lost.
If you read Kay’s novel (it’s hard to find though), I think you’d agree that he’d like that much more than Gaston Leroux’s novel. Kay at least gives him the chance to redeem himself.
Who was it that Christine was based off again? Wasn’t it Christina Nilsson? So while Christine never existed, someone similar to her did…
